The Suhum Magistrate Court presided over by Her Worship Naomi Anyah on Monday remanded a 43-year-old native of Kwahu-Abetifi into police custody for allegedly defrauding 10 women desperate for husband.

Stephen Gyamfi, who is to reappear in court on 4th February, 2016, is alleged to have taken money from these women under the pretext of marrying them.

The suspect was arrested on 21st January, 2016 at Zebila in the Upper East Region upon a tipoff.

A female teacher in Suhum is said to have reported to the police that the suspect has defrauded her to the tune of GH¢ 50,268.

Supt. Muchiraru Yahaya, the Suhum Municipal Police Commander, said upon interrogation, it was revealed that the suspect has defrauded about ten desperate women who want to get married.

According to Supt. Muchiraru, the lady took loans from banks and gave to the man to enable him clear some cars from the harbour. The amount she took summed up to her four years salary.

Supt. Yahaya said the man confessed that he uses marriage to swindle unsuspecting women, something he has been doing for the past 10 years.

The police noted that after studying a woman who is advancing in age and is desperate to be married off, Stephen Gyamfi will lure her by presenting himself as someone who just returned from abroad and need support to clear his cars and other goods from the port.

He therefore ties in his request with marriage which the women easily fall to.

The suspect immediately runs after succeeding in taking enough money from his victims.

Supt. Muchiraru has appealed to the general public who might have fallen victim to the suspect to assist the police with further information.
